About Me
Hi, I'm Kathleen McCarthy.
For more than 30 years, I have helped children build the skills and confidence they need to become successful readers. As a New York State Certified Literacy Specialist, IMSE Orton-Gillingham Certified Educator, and CERI Certified Structured Literacy Dyslexia Interventionist, I provide evidence-based literacy instruction grounded in the Science of Reading. My mission is to help every child unlock the joy and power of reading while supporting families with a clear path to literacy success.
I believe every child can learn to read with the right instruction, support, and opportunities to succeed. My approach is structured, explicit, and personalized to meet each child’s unique needs, helping them build confidence and experience success every step of the way.
Using a multisensory Orton-Gillingham approach grounded in the Science of Reading, I provide evidence-based instruction that strengthens foundational literacy skills, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. By identifying each child's strengths and areas for growth, I create targeted lessons that help them become skilled, confident, and lifelong readers.
I closely monitor each child’s progress and use ongoing assessment data to guide instruction, ensuring that lessons are targeted to their specific needs. Families receive regular updates so they can clearly see their child’s growth, understand areas of progress, and know the next steps in their literacy journey.
I believe that the strongest results come from a collaborative partnership between tutor and family. By working together, maintaining open communication, and sharing a common goal, we can provide the support and encouragement children need to thrive as confident, successful readers.
In addition to reading instruction, I support students in developing strong handwriting and written language skills, helping them communicate their thoughts with confidence, clarity, and purpose.
My goal extends beyond teaching children how to read. I strive to help every student build the confidence, independence, and resilience needed to become a successful learner. By strengthening both literacy skills and a positive mindset toward learning, I help children develop the foundation they need to thrive in school and beyond.

Each student begins with a comprehensive literacy assessment that helps identify strengths, areas for growth, and the most effective path forward. Using this information, I create an individualized plan designed to produce meaningful, measurable progress.
Whether your child is just beginning to learn to read, struggling with foundational skills, or has dyslexia, I provide structured, multisensory instruction grounded in the Science of Reading. Lessons are explicit, systematic, engaging, and designed to help students achieve lasting success.
